Decorating with Daybeds

Thursday, October 15th, 2009

Dress them or dress them down, not only are daybeds unique, they are also extremely versatile. Since they can be used for seating during the day and sleeping during the night, they can add functionality to a second bedroom, a guest room, a family room.

1Daybeds are also ideal for multipurpose rooms like a room that is used as a home office, a place to watch TV and somewhere for unexpected guests to sleep. Because of their distinctive yet charming appearance, daybeds can also be used as the focal point when decorating a room. Since daybeds come in many different styles, they are an ideal way to decorate a guest room or a child’s room or breathe new life into a sun room or porch that needs a little pick-me-up.

Choosing a Theme

Decide who will be using the room, either occasionally or in the case a child, on a permanent basis. Since daybeds come in a wide variety of styles, materials and colors, any theme or design you dream of can become a reality. Have fun. Gone are the days where the daybed is relegated to a young girl’s room – today the daybed is an increasingly popular choice for adding sleeping capacity to a home without compromising your design style. A daybed, with the right design and matching bed linens can be just as suitable for a boy’s space. Give a second bedroom to be used by adults a British West Indies plantation sophistication with a richly finished dark wood day bed. The possibilities are endless. Here are some simple design ideas to get you started.

The Romantic Victorian

2

Great for princess themed rooms, Victorian daybeds are ideal for adult spaces as well. To recreate the romantic side of the Victorian era, look for a daybed that has carved floral with a pineapple or floral motif, bun feet and pilasters. The profile of the daybed back should be curved or arched. Finishes can range from white painted to wood stained, but for that heirloom look with a softly romantic touch any finish you choose should be distressed or made to look worn.

The Victorian era was also know for its ironwork, both indoor and outdoor furniture, but especially beds. For a child’s room, a metal daybed with elaborate scrollwork and an antiqued finish would serve them well into their teen years.

To dress the daybed in a romantic Victorian manner, select daybed linens in berry and jewel tones. For contrast include softer colors like black, navy, ivory, pale yellow and burgundy.

 Going Coastal

3

Perfect for a guest room or a teen’s room, a nautical or beach theme creates the feeling you on a seaside holiday. It’s relaxed; it’s laid-back; it’s casual. For the coastal look, you will need a daybed that reflects the color of water, sand or sky. It should also include decorative accents like louvered panels, framed sides or panels made from organic materials like bamboo or rattan.

Choose a daybed bedding set that brings ocean into your décor. Nautical stripes and other ship-related topics like anchors and stars are an excellent way to make up your coastal daybed. Accent pillows or comforters with marine motifs such as shells, starfish and coastal birds are also good choices.

In an English Country Garden

4

For an English Country look that will give your room a relaxed, Old World charm, select a wood daybed with framed panels that resemble a garden fence or gate and pilasters and round oversized finials that could be mistaken for fence posts. White, oak, cherry or maple, the finish should definitely be distressed. The emphasis is on combining the warmth of the hearth with appreciation for nature. Wild roses are a common motif.

Bedding for your English Country daybed should be a riotous mix of patterns. Don’t be shy; plaids and stripes will happily mix with floral patterns in pastel or bold colors.

Ultra Modern Cool

5For a contemporary look with a touch of space age design, the daybed you select to create an ultra modern room will most certainly be constructed of metal, preferably with a steel or nickel brushed high gloss or matte finish. Lines are clean and spare for streamlined appearance. For an ultra modern style with a little retro sophistication, choose a daybed with geometric accents.

The daybed linens for your ultra modern cool daybed will be either black and white or bold colors with geometric or asymmetrical patterns. To add a little retro to your ultra modern cool design, choose a daybed comforter set with an interlocking circle pattern in different shades of gray.

Budget Guest Bedroom Design Ideas

It’s officially fall and you know what that means! Yes, we are heading slowly and inevitably toward “holiday season” – first Thanksgiving and then, for a lot of us, Hanukkah or Christmas.

South Shore Furniture Deauville Dark Chocolate Queen/Full Bed Set with Storage DrawersWhatever the occasion or festivity, every home should have a place for overnight guests, expected or unexpected, to sleep. If you have an unused room or a second bedroom that is currently being used for storage, now is the perfect time to convert it into a welcoming place for visitors. My room for guests is also where I write, but when people come over to stay, I tidy away computer-related stuff to make the space as inviting as possible. And I did it on a budget!

First things first

  • Empty the room of anything you don’t want keep or won’t be using so that you can see just how much space you have to work with and what exactly you will need to buy. Give the closet, if the room has one, the same treatment.
  • Decide the room’s main focus – home office/guest bedroom combination or just simply a guest room.
  • Make a list of furniture pieces you want to include. Less really is more – you want enough furniture to comfortably fill the room without making it cramped.
  • Pick a style and/or a theme for the room. This will lend the room a consistent look and feel, which, in the end, gives it a calming and inviting vibe.
  • Does it need repainting? Take the opportunity while the room is bare. When choosing a paint color for the guest room, select one that is neutral or earth-toned to create a soothing and relaxing environment after a long day of visiting, shopping, walking, etc.

Choose the furniture

Organize It All Hazelnut 2 Drawer Nightstand

  • Cheap doesn’t have to be a bad thing. Especially in today’s competitive market, some bedroom furniture manufacturers offer stylish yet budget-conscious beds or bedroom sets. Making a budget and sticking to it will give you a great feeling of satisfaction when you see the results of your handiwork.
  • The bed should be the largest size possible that will fit in the space, so that your guests will be comfortable, especially if they are sharing.
  • A nightstand makes any bedroom, particularly a guest room, functional and comfortable. It’s almost a must-have for visitors – putting a lamp by the bed saves them from having to hop out and turn out the light. Nightstands also add to the room’s storage capacity, a plus for tidying away toiletries, beauty products and souvenirs.
  • Add a dresser or a chest of drawers. Again, the more storage options you provide your guests, the more comfortable they will be. If you don’t have the room for a standard sized dresser or chest, another option is the lingerie chest. Lingerie chests are narrower than a chest of drawers, but offer a number of drawers, while designed specifically for clothing items such as nightgowns and undergarments, would be ideal in a guest room for other items of clothing as well.

What I Did

Hillsdale Westfield White Poster Bed

  • I didn’t have time to paint the entire room, which is a soft cream. I chose to paint the wall the headboard would rest against a deep mauve to make that side of the room the focal point. I wanted the emphasis on the bed and not on the desk.
  • Because my room is both my regular work space and a guest room, I chose to put a twin bed in the room. It opens up the space and makes it appear uncluttered, which is important to me when I am writing. But when guests like my sister and her husband come to visit, I get out the pop-up trundle and make up the two twin beds.
  • When I have visitors, I remove the file cabinet (it’s on wheels) and the laptop from the room to make the space less office-like.
  • I put a 4-drawer chest in the closet so that there would be room for both nightstands when the two twin beds are made up.

Designing a bedroom for guests that is warm and inviting doesn’t have to cost a lot. When it comes right down to it, it’s not the bedroom furniture that makes the room welcoming, but rather those special finishing touches like dressing the bed with luxurious bedding or placing a vase of flowers or a small gift basket on the dresser.

How to Turn Your Bathroom into a Home Spa Designer Bathroom

If you’ve been to the spa lately, you’ve probably noticed its impeccable style and stress-free vibe. But who says the spa is the only place to escape from your busy, demanding days?

Your new designer bathroom can give off the same relaxing feel by updating it with different fixtures. With all the diverse styles of faucets, sinks, cabinets, showers and tubs out there, you’re sure to be pampering yourself in your own private spa that embodies your design taste.

Oval Stone Bown Vessel SinkTraditional sinks are normally installed into a bathroom cabinet, or they are mounted on their own pillar. As functional as they are, most of these sinks are not very creative when it comes to style. If you want your sink to be visually stunning, yet practical, consider a vessel bowl sink. They sit on top of a bathroom counter, and resemble a large bowl.

Black Vessel SinkVessel sinks are currently in the height of style, and with their larger size, they catch water more easily. I love the look of this stone black vessel sink.

These bowl vessel sinks also come in a variety of shapes and colours, so finding a sink to match your spa-influenced bathroom shouldn’t be difficult.

Dreamline Chrome Bathroom FaucetBathroom faucets have also come a long way. The standard “hot” and “cold” handles, complete with basic spigot, are a thing of the past. Modern faucets are taller, slimmer, and definitely more attractive.

Tall Waterfall FaucetWaterfall faucets are an innovative and stylish new trend. To use a waterfall faucet, simply pull the handle from side to side to produce hot or cold, and watch the water pour downwards off its plate into the sink. They give off a “spa vibe” with their soothing waterfall flow.

Glass Double Basin Bathroom Vanity SetIf you’re leaning towards replacing your entire sink, faucet, and mirror, there are bathroom vanity sets available that include all three fixtures. This is a simple way to find pieces that go together in one easy step. Look for vanity sets with double sinks if you are planning to share your bathroom – it’ll be easier in the morning when you’re getting ready for the day.

Bathroom Vanity Sink SetBathroom vanity sets with single sinks usually come with a storage cabinet instead of a second sink. Perfect for storing your towels and toiletries – and aromatherapy candles, of course.

Jetted Glass Steam ShowerThe spa is known for its luxurious steam showers and Jacuzzi tubs. If you want to bring the spa into your bathroom, separate your tub from your shower. Extravagant showers with body jets on the side, foot massagers, and different temperature steam settings are an ideal way to indulge yourself in the ultimate spa experience.

Designer BathroomA really interesting way to add style and interest to your bathroom is by installing a modern massage bathtub. Jets on the sides of the tub and seating grooves offer the best in spa-like comfort. Bathtubs with clean, straight lines and minimal details are fresh and updated, instantly transforming your bathroom into a carefree getaway.

Designer Shower CurtainFor simple spa-influenced transformations, all you need are a few accessories. Spa colours are calm, warm, and inviting, so opt for a designer shower curtain that fits the spa colour criteria.

Oriental MirrorOutdated mirrors are frameless and lack charm. Look for a mirror with modern, unique designs to instantly freshen up your bathroom.

Easy Design Tips to Give Your Bathroom a Makeover!

Bathrooms are utilitarian rooms that are often overlooked when redecorating a home but there are some great bathroom design ideas for giving your bathroom a makeover. If your stone pedestal bathroom vanitybathroom(s) at home are more than ten years old – chances are they are functional but not as attractive as they could be. The beauty of it is that you often don’t have to spend a lot of money to transform your bath so let’s look at some changes that you might enjoy.

Many older bathrooms had built-in white sinks with long counters and the master bathrooms usually had two sinks along with storage shelves and drawers beneath the countertop. While these are extremely convenient for married people sharing a bathroom they were not very imaginative when it came to bathroom design style. They also generally had a large mirror that would extend across the entire length with no framework – another basic accessory that was needed but was not too attractive.

With pedestal sinks becoming popular again but if you still need to have storage you can add that with an attractive cabinet that is either part of the sink or entirely separate. Many of the vanity sinks today look like a piece of furniture with exquisite carved doors and a huge selection of styles so you can have your storage and functionality while adding a handsome look to your bath.

Mirrors have progressed a long way as well and most are framed beautifully like a painting and look especially nice over these attractive sinks and vanities. Your faucets and other fixtures have also matured with a wide selection of polished brass, chrome, antique bronze and even onyx and other stones used as decorative touches to complement the sinks and vanities – and you can often get towel bars and other accessories to match.bathroom vanity bowl sink

Separate designer sinks are another popular way to go – particularly in a guest bath. These gorgeous sinks look like works of art with their sculptured glass or stone and come in dramatic colors, designs and shapes and make an immediate impression upon entering a bathroom. Usually placed on a vanity they look too pretty to use but function just as well as the old fashioned kind – and sure look a lot better.

bathroom faucetPaint on walls in a passionate red or peaceful blue can also transform a bathroom and of course new flooring in beautiful tiles or travertine can all add their bits of glamour to a bathroom makeover. It doesn’t have to be a lot but it is amazing what a difference any change does to a bathroom. Simply adding a coat of paint and purchasing some stylish towels or changing the faucets – any of these little things can give a bathroom a fresh look and won’t cost you much either.  So whatever your budget might be – you can afford to do something that will give a bath a makeover and you will love it.
