Shabby Chic Teen Bedroom

Friday, October 29th, 2010

Shabby chic décor is the perfect opportunity to create a new bedroom for your teenage daughter, by using one or two of her favorite pieces already in the room and adding some that are new (or new to her). It can be as feminine and romantic as she wants it to be; it unashamedly mixes antiques (or traditional style reproductions) with contemporary furniture. Since shabby chic is all about texture, shape and color, it’s a great style for a teen’s room because it gives her a lot of different ways in which to express herself.

For a shabby chic teenage bedroom, decide where the color will be concentrated. If your daughter would like an intense shade of rose, pink or orange (all shabby chic shades) on the walls, choose pastel or neutral hues for accessories such as window treatments, bedding and the area rug. Part of the fun of this style is combining ornately decorated furniture, lace or patterned fabric curtains, antiqued brass hurricane lamps or a chandelier and colorful bedding together in ways that both surprise and please.

If she isn’t keeping her bed, maybe now is a good time to choose a type of bed that better reflects the shabby chic style. To create a teen bedroom for your daughter that possesses a softly romantic traditional heritage with an endearing Old World charm, choose a sleigh, poster or canopy bed. The bed of any bedroom interior design is the focal point of the room, but never more so in a shabby chic teenage bedroom. For a focal point that really commands attentions select a canopy bed and add draperies that tie in with at least two other elements in the room.

Contemporary Style for the Teen Male in your Home

Friday, October 22nd, 2010

When it’s time to give your teen son’s bedroom a new look, contemporary bedroom furniture is a good choice for several reasons. Contemporary style typically has smooth, clean lines that give a living space a calm and uncluttered appearance. Because contemporary bedroom furniture typically has restrained decorative detail, it’s ideal for furnishing a male teenage bedroom. Contemporary design focuses on function, which is always a good thing to consider when decorating a teen’s room. The important thing to remember when designing a contemporary teenage bedroom for your son is to include several different zones – even if the room is on the small side – that will allow him to be independent while safeguarding his privacy.

Zone #1 – the Bed

Especially if you’re redecorating for the first time since his dinosaur or pirate phase, typically it will be the bed that is the first thing they will want to change. If you have the floor space to spare, now might be to upgrade from a twin bed to something a bit roomier. His bed is not just a place to sleep; it will also serve as his “couch” where he’ll stretch out to study, listen to music or watch a movie. Adding a trundle bed to his bed gives him the option of having a friend or two over.

Zone #2 – Workspace

He will need a workspace that will be both a comfortable place to study and to play games or surf the web. Metal is a good material choice for contemporary teenage bedroom furniture. Not only does will it be easy to clean, it will also be strong and durable. A computer desk that has textured metal panels creates a vibe that is cutting-edge contemporary.

Zone #3 – Hanging Out

Having someplace to hang out is just as important as a place to sleep or study. Give your teenage son somewhere to watch movies or television with friends that he doesn’t have to share with the rest of the family by adding an entertainment center to your teens room décor. Don’t forget a couple of bean bag chairs. A bean bag chair can be easily moved around the room to wherever it’s needed.

Don’t redecorate without his help or input. Yes, the paint might be peeling off the walls or it might look like the room is sans closet and dresser because every article of his clothing is on the floor, but unless you have his okay, you might want to skip the makeover project until he’s ready for a change. Contemporary style is known for its clean lines, geometric shapes and bold colors, which makes it a perfect interior design style for a teenage boy’s bedroom.

Social Column – Contemporary, Transitional and Traditional Style Pedestal Tables

Wednesday, October 20th, 2010

Aside from conjuring up images of King Arthur and his knights, the symbol for infinity or lasting love, there is something about round that has a candid appeal. It’s up front, straightforward and has no angles. Round is a pleasing shape, with its smooth lines, simple profile and understated strength. No matter what the style – contemporary, transitional or traditional – round dining tables have a classic appearance that never goes out of style. Because it is ideally suited to smaller-sized living spaces, today we’re going to look at dining room interior design featuring the round pedestal table.

Contemporary Style Round Pedestal Table

Contemporary style round pedestal tables capture the spirit of a modern lifestyle by emphasizing clean lines, functional yet aesthetically pleasing designs and unique profiles that catch the eye. Visual interest is typically created by pairing the round tabletop with a pedestal base that has a distinctive shape. A contemporary pedestal dining table can also create visual interest by using construction materials such as wood, leather and/or glass in a variety of unusual ways or combinations.

Transitional Style Round Pedestal Table

A transitional style pedestal table is growing in popularity due to its “middle of the road” attitude. By blending elements of traditional and contemporary styles together, the result is a pedestal dining table that has flowing lines and beautiful decorative detail without the “fussiness” of the more formal, historical time periods. Transitional round pedestal tables, while lines and profiles tend to be tempered, possess a sophisticated, inviting allure.

Traditional Style Round Pedestal Table

There is such a wide range to of pedestal dining tables to choose from, including ones that magically transform into an oval shape with the help of a leaf. A traditional round pedestal table that includes one leaf or two leaves allows you to seat more people at the table for special occasions and then return the table to its cosier (round) configuration when a larger setup is no longer needed. Traditional style pedestal tables display classic elements like elaborately carved pedestal bases; highly polished or distressed finishes; and ornate decorations incorporating shell, acanthus or scroll motifs.

What makes a Round Pedestal Table Special

Since round pedestal tables have a single post to support the tabletop, the footprint for this type of dining table is generally smaller than that of other types of standard-sized dining tables. But there is just something special about round pedestal tables as opposed to square or even octagonal. Here are a few attributes that make round pedestal tables really stand out.

  • They are great space-savers
  • Everyone seated around the table can easily see and interact with everybody
  • Because there is essentially only one table leg that is in the middle, there’s no danger of anyone bumping their knees
  • When not used for dining, it’s an ideal place to play cards or board games like Scrabble

Urban Sophisticated – The Modern Style Bedroom

Friday, October 15th, 2010

How you design your bedroom and the bedroom furniture you choose to furnish it with is very important to the overall mood. We instantly feel relaxed and welcomed in spaces, especially bedroom spaces that are spacious, well-lit, uncluttered and aesthetically pleasing. Known for its underlying simplicity of line, shape, form, the clean lines and streamlined detail of modern style bedroom furniture ultimately contributes to an atmosphere of calm and tranquility, which is exactly the right tone you want for a bedroom that will be your sanctuary after a busy or even hectic day.

Earth tones and neutral palettes with splashes of bold color characterize a modern style bedroom. Whites, grays and blacks are commonly used as main or accent wall colors. Color is always used sparely: in a modern interior design bedroom, color is an exclamation instead of a conversation. If you’ve chosen a bold color like red, orange or intense blue as an accent color, select neutral colors for other items in the room such as lamps, window treatments and carpets or area rugs.

To the unfamiliar eye, furnishings can look stark or devoid of personality. Clean lines, natural elements, lighter finishes and polished, gleaming expanses typify modern style bedroom furniture. Because form is function, decorative detail is viewed as “unnecessary.”

Visual interest is commonly created through the design and appearance of the individual bedroom furniture piece. Shape, both strictly geometric and asymmetrical, is often used for dramatic effect. The result is bedroom furniture that is deceptively simple; but because lines are uncluttered, the eye isn’t working overtime, and the sleek profiles work just as well in smaller spaces as they do in larger ones.

When accessorizing – don’t! As with modern furniture design, when accessorizing your modern style bedroom, less really is more. While you do want the room to be inviting, you don’t want to add anything that does not have a specific purpose; including items that are solely decorative will not reflect true modern style principles.

Modern style furniture has clean lines and streamlined detail. Profiles are strictly angular, geometric or asymmetrical. It can even have a “space age” appeal; so decide which modern vibe will work for you.

Urban Sophisticated – The Modern Style Bathroom

Friday, October 8th, 2010

If ever there was any room in your home that is naturally suited to modern style, it would have to be the bathroom. It is the one space where sharp, angular profiles with clean lines make a big splash. Modern design, emerging post-WWII, takes anything traditional and pares it down to basic elements that celebrate cutting-edge ideas, inventions and innovations. Materials are commonly bleached or lighter colored woods, metal and glass with space-age, highly polished surfaces. A modern style bathroom combines an ultra-urban vibe with spa chic for a look that is fresh yet luxurious.

In keeping with the minimalist tradition, this metal and glass vanity fills all of the modern style requirements. The vanity has spare lines; the base of the bathroom vanity is made of stainless steel; and form meets function in the integrated towel bar. It won’t be just a place to wash your face; a modern style bathroom vanity that combines cool, clean metal and glass with sleek lines makes a trendy statement that you will appreciate for awhile.

For an ultra modern look and feel try floating. Some of us tend to shy away from modern style because it can appear “cold” or unwelcoming. But putting that rumor to rest, wall mounted bathroom vanities, bathroom sinks (without the vanity cabinet) and bathroom cabinets create a floating effect that is dramatic and just plain beautiful to look at. Especially if the vanity is constructed of wood, wall mounted bathroom fixtures can create a warm and welcoming vibe while possessing a space-age appearance.

Modern design bathroom furniture is typified by polished surfaces, geometric or asymmetrical shapes and neutral palettes. Even though glass and metal are the most common materials used in the construction of modern style bathroom fixtures and cabinets, when wood is introduced into the mix, it can work with metal-and-glass elements to create visual interest. Depending on placement and presentation, a modern style vanity utilizing asymmetrical shape to maximum effect, will make a stunning and sophisticated statement in your bathroom.

Urban Sophisticated – The Modern Style Living Room

Friday, October 1st, 2010

If you’re redecorating the living room and you want something completely different from what you had, a modern style living room might be just the solution you’re looking for. Modern style is noted for its minimalist lines and often stark and dramatic use of metal and glass as construction materials or bleached organic elements such as wood or bamboo as accents. Because the focus of this design style is on form and function, modern style living room furniture pieces have uncomplicated lines that are clean and straightforward, giving the room a spacious, uncluttered feel.

Balancing Neutrals with Color

Modern style is notorious for its lack of color. Typical palettes for modern style living rooms include neutrals like white, gray or taupe. But this is underestimating color in a modern style context. The use of bold accent hues on one or two walls is a popular way to introduce color into a modern living room interior design. If this idea appeals to you, decide where the color will go. If you pick a bold color for the living room walls, (either one or all), plan on sticking to neutrals for your living room furniture pieces. The reverse will hold true: if you decide to use brightly colored fabrics for upholstered furniture pieces such as sofas and chairs and accessories like area rugs, curtains and accent pillows, paint the walls in a neutral shade.

Modern Style Living Room Furniture

Modern style emerged mid-twentieth century, as an expression of post-World War II sensibilities and a reflection of new ideas, new materials and new inventions. Choose furniture for your modern style living room that breaks with tradition: occasional tables like coffee tables, console tables or end tables should have no decorative detail; furniture profiles for sofas, entertainment centers, bookshelves, etc. will have sleek and streamlined profiles. Finishes are typically highly polished but they can also have a raw, natural or bleached appearance. Focus on geometric or asymmetrical patterns, when selecting fabrics. Furniture that incorporates geometric shapes or asymmetrical designs is ideal for a modern style living room.

Falling for You – Traditional Style that Reflects the Warmth of Autumn

Friday, September 24th, 2010

If ever there was one interior design style that captures the spirit of fall and the warm, rich colors associated with the autumn season, it would have to be traditional. Traditional style living room furniture is characterized by medium to dark finishes; distressed, matte or highly polished. Classic accents like inset panels, carved legs and armrests and leaf motifs are reflections of past eras and trends. You walk into the browns, golds and wines of a traditional living room and it can evoke life in a country mansion as it was lived in Victorian times.

Fall colors have a psychological pull on us that is almost soothing after the hotly intense yellows, greens and blues of summer. When choosing a color palette for your traditional style living room, pick earth tones, preferably more intense shades, that reflect the turning yellows and golds of autumn leaves; the greens found in moss, forests and grasses preparing for the onslaught of winter; and the browns and reds of the earth itself before it hibernates beneath blankets of snow.

You can bring fall into your living room interior design in a more “hands on” way with specific accent furniture pieces. Sheraton, Queen Anne, Victorian, French Provincial and English Country are all popular traditional styles that commonly use hand-painted designs and marquetry patterns as decoration on furnishings like console tables, end tables, coffee tables and accent chests. Another clever way to bring the colors and themes of autumn into your traditional style living room is to choose area rugs, chair and sofa fabrics and accent pillows and cushions that include a leaf motif.

While traditional style has an understated elegance that is appealing, introducing the autumnal element adds another layer of sophistication to your living room décor. Since traditional furniture typically has flowing lines, curved profiles and sinuous decorative detailing, a natural, underlying soothing sense of motion is created. In a traditional designed living room that has a fall theme and incorporates its colors and patterns will create a timeless sense of place you can enjoy for many years.

Eclectically Speaking – The Bedroom Room Eclectic Style

Friday, September 10th, 2010

An eclectic style bedroom contrasts new with old; trendy with classic; distressed finishes with highly polished surfaces. It has the feeling and appearance of being transitional in nature. Eclectic style has the added advantage of being totally unique to you; the embodiment of your tastes and experiences. It’s also about layering and the use of different textures for maximum effect, which is perfect for decorating a bedroom, because it’s such a personal space.

When decorating a bedroom eclectic style, the spotlight is on you, the person doing the decorating. Since it’s all about mixing and matching different design and style elements, start with furniture ideas you like or plan to buy two or three new pieces of furniture in different interior design styles you enjoy, like a transitional style platform bed, a contemporary chandelier or floor lamp or a traditional nightstand. In addition to grouping furniture pieces of different styles together, an eclectic décor also gives you the freedom to use accent furnishings in surprising ways. Putting an accent chest like the Butler Specialty Artists’ Originals Console Cabinet in Tiger Stripe Finish in the bedroom is bold and dramatic.

While an eclectic style bedroom should look mixed and matched, it shouldn’t look cramped, cluttered or jumbled. Ultimately all elements – walls, furniture and accessories – should be balanced to make your interior design individualistic yet warm and comfortable. An easy way to accomplish this is to pair each element with its opposite. For example, each antique or reproduction piece in the room should be matched with something contemporary or retro. If you would like to create a really dramatic mood in your bedroom, use contrasting elements instead of furniture pieces and accessories that complement one another.

Carefully combining traditional, transitional and contemporary styles together will create an eclectic look and feel that is sophisticated and trendy, while being totally unique to you at the same time. Don’t forget that this is the one room of your home that should be a sanctuary; while it should be visually interesting, it should also be designed to relax and refresh. When decorating a room, but especially when decorating a bedroom, a particular mood is largely due to the delicate blending of soothing neutral and earth tone palettes with splashes of bold or unexpected color. Because of its diverse nature – a less formal approach to the use of color and shape – eclectic style possesses a casual elegance that is ideal when decorating a bedroom.

Eclectically Speaking – The Living Room Eclectic Style

Friday, September 3rd, 2010

The living room is often the first room in your home a guest or visitor will see. Nothing makes guests feel welcome faster than walking into a well-designed living room that perfectly reflects you and your family’s style and personality. The overall effect of an eclectic style living is an interior décor that is unique to your home, because you can choose how relaxed or sophisticated you would like it to be. By selecting furniture from different sub styles ranging from traditional to contemporary and anything in between, you can focus on including furniture pieces into your living room design regardless if the “match.” This is the ultimate appeal of decorating a living room in eclectic style.

Color your World (or at least the living room)

Implementing eclectic style in your living room allows you to contrast soft neutrals of earth and sand with warm, bold colors like fire engine red, vintage rose, intense golds and oranges. This can mean anything from painting the main walls earth tones then adding an accent color in bright orange or vintage rose to one wall to choosing accessories from different period styles. The way you use color in an eclectic style living room should definitely include laying shades and hues throughout the room by piling the sofa with accent pillows; selecting curtains in a different fabric from the other principal fabrics in the room such as the upholstery for the sofa and armchair; and adding a colorfully patterned area rug that will give the room more texture and definition.

Choosing Eclectic Living Room Furniture

When furnishing an eclectic living room, start with a focal point, which can be an architectural feature such as a niche, built-in wall unit or a wood burning fireplace. It can also be a piece of furniture like an entertainment center, bookcase wall or an electric fireplace.

Choose a sofa that has plenty of “character;” one that will blend easily with a variety of styles.

The secret to a successful eclectic living room design is to provide the senses, especially the eye with dramatic contrasts, like a vintage chandelier or vintage floor lamp with a contemporary area rug comprised of geometric shapes. Contrasts that pair the unexpected together – a modern polished metal floor lamp with a 1930s velvet button tufted sectional – create visual surprises that add texture and interest.

The reason eclectic style living room ends up being so personal and exclusive is because it is the result of an imagination, creativity and resourcefulness that is unique to each person. While there are supposed to be a mix of styles – that’s the whole idea behind an eclectic décor design – all elements should “play nice” with one another. To prevent an eclectic style living room from feeling busy or “disconnected.” you can ensure visual cohesion by doing one or all or a combination of the following:

  • Regardless of the styles, furniture pieces and/or accessory items, repeat shapes and textures throughout the room
  • Especially if furnishings are different colors or possess different finishes, replace the handles and/or drawer pulls of your living room furniture case goods; this will lend each item commonality
  • Particularly when furniture and collectibles are from a variety of eras decades or even centuries apart from one another, be when accessorizing; “connect” items to each other through a distinctive feature such color or shape.
  • If there are too many different kinds of finishes (including colors and textures like matte, distressed and highly polished) in the living, choose the furniture pieces that appear the most “jarring” and refinish them to match at least one other piece in the room.

Out in the Open – Transitional Style for Open Concept Living Spaces

Friday, August 27th, 2010

If you’ve just bought a condo or purchased a loft or moved into a bachelor/studio apartment for the first time, it might have never occurred to you before how are you going to decorate a space where all the “rooms” run one into another. Do you have to stick to one wall color? How do you arrange the living room furniture? Are you going to be stuck with the kitchen in your peripheral vision while you’re watching television? Even though you have considerably less space to work with when decorating a bachelor or studio apartment than you do when moving into a condo or a loft, the principles for making an open concept floor plan comfortable and inviting will be the same. Choosing an interior design style like transitional for an open concept home, will give your living space a contemporary synergy while honoring certain traditional elements that add sophistication and a chic sensibility.

The good news is you can choose only one for the whole space or not; it’s really a personal preference. You do however, want avoid painting the same wall two different colors even if they are a part of two distinctly different areas, like the dining room and the living room, unless it makes “sense” visually. However, picking an accent wall and choosing to paint it another color, especially a bold one, will give your transitional style living space definition, while letting you introduce more color into your interior design.

It’s important to mark out individual areas of an open concept home: having clearing defined areas, each with a specific purpose, prevents the furniture from appearing “lost” or “jumbled.” Transitional style living room furniture and dining furniture include traditional decorative and architectural elements as interpreted by contemporary design principles is a great way to decorate a condo, loft or studio apartment, because you can select furniture for the different open areas, that while still transitional in style, possess a slightly different look or feel. Even though everything is out in the open, some other ways to create the sense of separate rooms are:

  • Use a different area rug for you dining area than the one chosen for the living room
  • “Divide” up the space with strategically placed open shelf bookcases or decorative folding screens
  • Hang artwork on the walls that emphasizes what the particular space is being used for (pictures of Parisian cafes or outdoor bistros in the dining area)

When choosing furniture for an open area living space, select furniture pieces like a coffee table or an entertainment center that includes hidden storage. Dual or multi-purpose furnishings such a hallway bench or an ottoman coffee table will increase your storage options in the long run, giving you more place to tidy things away – something that is ultra important in an open design condo, loft or apartment.
