Contemporary Home Décor Ideas
The contemporary look of today continues to have the sleek modern lines but with a softer edge for comfort because – above all – people want to be able to relax at home. This means that you don’t have to stick strictly to a particular look but can accent it with ideas of your own that reflect your taste. So what does that really mean?
A great contemporary home decor idea is, if you have a neutral sofa in beige or charcoal you can add some color with decorative pillows in bright colors or embroidered stitching. A festive ethnic rug from Morocco or other exotic location will bring splashes of color into a living room or dining room without taking away from the overall look. You can tie the colors of the rug and pillows together and in the dining room you can add a runner or place mats that coordinate with the rug or a bright painting on the wall.
Green plants or flowers in any room can bring nature inside and create more warmth in the room as well. Mirrors can be functional as well as decorative so you can hang one over the fireplace or put a framed one in the bathroom making it much friendlier. Lamps and other fixtures can also add character to a room especially if you have solid colors in the furnishings, the shades can provide a warm glow or a chandelier can add interest as well as light to a room.
Bedrooms can easily be spruced up with colorful bedding or pillows on the beds or in an upholstered chair in the room. It’s amazing the variety and array of really inspirational linens that can be found with nautical stripes or a floral print or a bright plaid in quilts or comforters. You could also add a platform canopy bed to really create a haven to retreat into as a 
bedroom should be considered your refuge when you want to truly relax.
Paint on your walls creates a much warmer atmosphere than the traditional white and can make a room larger or cozier – depending on the look you want to achieve. You can add color to just one wall to coordinate with an area rug or pillow colors that you want to bring focus to and this adds a little drama while still maintaining your innate contemporary feel.
If you have a home office you can take the dull out of that desk and file cabinet with creative containers to hold paper clips or pencils – even using a colorful coffee mug adds a bit of spice to a bland office environment. Add a decorative Tiffany lamp over or on the desk or a cheery red or blue chair that is comfortable yet attractive as well!
Remember that contemporary decorating does not have to mean boring just because it is normally neutral colors – you can still bring some pizzazz to an area and provide a welcome retreat by soothing color schemes that will remind you to relax and enjoy your home rather than just going there to eat and sleep.
