Interior Design Questions – Ask Nicolette Free Interior Design Advice
Hi Nicolette,
My partner and i have recently bought our first home and we’re now at the decorating stage.We have a really spacious living area that is in desperate need of a makeover (see pics).
We have a corner micro suede cream couch that was a recent purchase and a black glass tv unit with a wide screen tv. I’m a little stuck with what colour i can paint the walls as the carpet will have to stay (i wanted floor boards) 
due to heating issues, they are very bare and need a major change.
I was wanting to invest in a gloss white low-line tv unit also in place of the black one to lighten it up as the flooring is a dark colour. Is this a good suggestion?? What other suggestions do you have to help liven the room up?? I love clean lines and am into the ‘contemporary’ look but have no idea how to make a few simple changes!! Please help!

Thank you for the pictures, they’ve really helped me out! The first thing I have to say is that the red accent wall does not work with the dark carpet! I actually like the rest of the walls white – they don’t compete with the carpet. Here are some different shades of white I like from Benjamin Moore:
Also, you could repaint that red accent wall in another color. I drew these colors from the cushions on your couch:

When it comes to other ways to liven up your living room, why not invest in a coffee table? If you’re going to go with a white contemporary TV stand, you’ll want a table that goes with it. Here are a couple examples that I think will compliment your living room:
