As soon as someone steps through your front door, they instantly get an impression of your home. Since the entryway or foyer is typically the first area of your living space guests will see when entering your home, it should look as welcoming and inviting as possible. Often, though, our decorating efforts are focused on other more utilized areas of our homes and the front hallway gets shortchanged in the interior design department. Updating the foyer is a simple and easy way to improve the look of your home’s entrance, while defining the character and style of your décor. The first thing that might spring to mind is space…or lack therefore. Not to worry; whether you live in a house, condominium or apartment, there a things you can do that will spruce up the look of your front hallway regardless of how many square feet you have to work with.

Small

Approach this redecorating project like you would a room. Especially if the entrance area is small, take measurements. A bench might be particularly appealing to you as a convenient place to sit when putting on boots or shoes, but if it ends up not fitting or being banged into whenever someone opens the front door, it’s going to defeat the purpose of the makeover. However, no matter how small the entryway is, you should be able to include some type of accent table and a mirror.

Living in an apartment, I have a small entrance way. Since I am constantly misplacing my keys, it is of utmost importance for to have table near the front door. I chose a half moon (demi lune) console table and paired it with a mirror. The mirror is directly across from the dining room window, so not only does it make the hallway seem bigger, it also brings light into a dark space.

If there really is no room for furniture of any kind, you still can make an entryway inviting by including wall sconces, which will add ambient light and wall art in warm colors.

Medium

If your hallway is medium-sized, you can add specific pieces of furniture that will add functionality to the entrance of your home. Create a welcoming atmosphere with bench. A storage bench is not only a practical piece of furniture to have in a hall or foyer, but especially if you have children, it will also help contain clutter and keep the area tidier.

If your hallway lacks a closet, give your guests a handy place to hang their coats with a coat rack. Coat racks can include features such as a revolving section to make access to clothes easier, an umbrella compartment or a set of lower hooks for children.

Putting plants in a corner of the hallway or entryway improves air quality and gives your home a welcoming appearance. Use pedestal-style plant stands of varying heights to create visual interest.

Large

When there’s plenty of room to space, you can go town and design a foyer dressed to impress. Start with an oversized mirror and console table that will fill the space. Position a set of accent chairs on either side. Or if you have room for a round pedestal table, place it in the center of the foyer; use t to display a vase of flowers or a piece of sculpture.

Accent furniture like a console table, a mirror or hall bench, improves the appeal, design and functionality of an entryway by adding texture and visual interest. No matter how big or small the entryway of front hallway of your home is, you will be able to breathe new life into your foyer. Breathing new life into your home is as simple as a fresh coat of paint, a vase of flowers and a couple of well-placed pieces of furniture.
