Design Question

When dressing a sleigh bed, should it ever have a dust ruffle?

Design Answer

Whether or not you use a dust ruffle on your sleigh bed is really a personal preference. I have a sleigh bed and I constantly use the dust ruffle that came as part of the bed-in-a-bag. When the dust ruffle is in the wash, I really don’t enjoy seeing the space under the bed. I tend to feel that the bed doesn’t look completely dressed. On the other hand, I love seeing the exposed wood sides; it makes the bedroom look richer somehow.

You didn’t specify, but it would also depend on the type of sleigh bed that you own. For example, a platform sleigh bed is typically lower to the ground than a standard sleigh bed that uses a box spring. In that case, you probably wouldn’t be able to use a dust ruffle then, because the frame would be too low to the ground.

Hope this helps. Thanks for writing in. Come back next Monday for another design question and answer.

Rethinking the Modern Metal Bed

Bed with Frame

Metal beds are very common, but a modern style bed made of metal possesses a unique contemporary beauty. They typically have clean, uncluttered lines and a sleek appearance. Since the bed sets the tone of the room, it’s important to get it right when you are decorating the one room in your home that is also a sanctuary after a long day.

Not Just One Style

At first glance, it might seem that modern is well…modern. It is characterized by clean, streamlined lines, architectural forms and the use of geometric shapes and asymmetrical profiles. But modern metal beds come in a range of styles and designs that are as individual as the person looking to buy one.

Because of their minimalist nature and construction material, modern metal platform beds that have highly polished finishes can be visually striking and have a dramatic impact on the room’s interior design. When the welded joints of a metal platform bed made of heavy gauge tubing are exposed and finished with brushed nickel finish, it can have a distinctly industrial feel. Metal platform beds in a modern style that has either both a headboard and footboard or just a headboard sometimes have the appearance of artwork, because of stylized profiles and metalwork accents.

Sleigh beds are typically associated with traditional style than they are with modern. But many manufacturers use the graceful, curvy profile as a jumping off point for their own modern interpretation of the classic sleigh bed. A metal sleigh bed commands attention. Subtle with style and sophistication, it pairs rolling curves with linear lines to create an updated look that is both adaptable and versatile.

Matching a low-profile metal bed with tall posts creates the illusion of grand scale, without sacrificing precious space. This kind of modern poster bed is very contemporary, because clean lines are emphasized by the metallic finish for a look that is distinctive yet restful.

Modern Metal Bed Construction

A wide range of ores and elements are used to make modern metal beds. When two or more elements are combined together, it is called an alloy. Tubular steel is a common construction material for metal beds. A metal bed made of tubular steel is lighter than one made of standard or premium iron, but can be just as strong and durable, depending on the gauge of tubular steel used to make the bed.

Modern metal beds crafted from iron are strong and long lasting. Typically, the frame will be made of iron, but if the bed includes any spindles and/or straight bars, they are constructed from some kind of heavy gauge steel. Decorative accents, such the bars to connect finials to the bed posts, finials and metelwork elements are often made of cast iron. A well-made cast iron bed will last for decades. Most modern style metal beds are made of one type of alloy or another.

Buying Tips and Decorating Ideas

When a modern metal bed with a distinct design is perfectly matched to the bedding as well as the bedroom’s overall décor, it creates a bold new look that has an edgy, cosmopolitan appeal.

Metal beds can look trendy, stark or elegant. Decide on the look you want to achieve before making a final purchase.

Modern metal beds often conjure up the image of sharp edges, stark lines and cold finishes. Don’t let appearances fool you. A metal bed with a unique design is the essence of cool. And it’s comfortable too.

Decorating a room modern style room and furnishing it with a metal bed is an economical way to go. Even high-end ones are generally more affordable than their counterparts made of wood.

Modern Interior Design – The Bedroom

Friday, December 11th, 2009

As discussed in parts 1 and 2 of this mini series on modern interior design, modern style is characterized by clean, spare lines, sleek and polished surfaces and geometric or asymmetrical profiles. While metal and glass are popular construction materials, wood also plays a role in modern interior design. But again, the look is smooth and polished, even when the wood is bleached or has a textured appearance. Form is function: no decorative detail allowed! Visual interest is created through the design and structure of the furniture piece itself. This is what makes modernism so attractive when decorating a room: the result is neat, clean and soothing.

Color palettes are predominately neutral. Whites, grays and taupes are popular shades. For the room we are creating today, one of the whites like “ice mist” or “snowfall white” would provide the perfect contrast for the bed that will be the focal point of the room.

Deceptively simple in design, a platform bed is a minimal, rectangular form, often without a headboard or a footboard. It is for this reason that platform beds are often associated with modern style. Since a platform bed generally doesn’t need a box spring or any other type of foundation to support the mattress, the bed stands closer to the floor. This can work to your advantage when decorating a smaller sized room, because it can make the space appear larger. The Modloft Ludlow Platform Bed (New) in White Leatherette With Wenge Frame has clean lines and an angular profile. The button-tufted detailing provides visual interest while the white headboard paired with a dark wood frame creates a stunning contrast.

When dressing the bed, you can choose one of two options. The first is to keep it “stark” by using white bedding as pictured. While some people are attracted to the clean, minimalist look of modern design, they might be reluctant to go that route but are afraid it will turn out too bleak or cold, the second option is to select bedding that will introduce color into your modern interior bedroom design.

The angular profile of the Modloft Ludlow Nightstand in Wenge Finish (Set of Two) (pictured above with the bed), echoes the profiles of the bed frame and the headboard. Another excellent choice for our modern style bedroom would be the Lifestyle Solutions Zurich 3 Drawer Nightstand. As sleek and linear as the bed is, the base of this nightstand mimics the frame of the platform bed.

The final finishing touches to our modern style bedroom would include accessorizing. While the whole point of accessorizing a room is to make it more comfortable and inviting, as well as functional, you will want to be true to the spirit of the modern interior by sticking to the rule “less is more.” Surfaces should not be cluttered. Make sure you include plenty of storage options, like the Global Furniture USA Camilla Dresser, which will allow you to put things away, out of sight. Table lamps or bedside table lamps should be punctuation points in the design of your modern bedroom. Again, select lamps with clean lines, whether rounded or angular. Forms should be simple yet distinctive in order to provide sufficient amount of light. To add drama to the room, choose bedside lamps that have the appearance of a piece of sculpture.

Budget Guest Bedroom Design Ideas

It’s officially fall and you know what that means! Yes, we are heading slowly and inevitably toward “holiday season” – first Thanksgiving and then, for a lot of us, Hanukkah or Christmas.

South Shore Furniture Deauville Dark Chocolate Queen/Full Bed Set with Storage DrawersWhatever the occasion or festivity, every home should have a place for overnight guests, expected or unexpected, to sleep. If you have an unused room or a second bedroom that is currently being used for storage, now is the perfect time to convert it into a welcoming place for visitors. My room for guests is also where I write, but when people come over to stay, I tidy away computer-related stuff to make the space as inviting as possible. And I did it on a budget!

First things first

  • Empty the room of anything you don’t want keep or won’t be using so that you can see just how much space you have to work with and what exactly you will need to buy. Give the closet, if the room has one, the same treatment.
  • Decide the room’s main focus – home office/guest bedroom combination or just simply a guest room.
  • Make a list of furniture pieces you want to include. Less really is more – you want enough furniture to comfortably fill the room without making it cramped.
  • Pick a style and/or a theme for the room. This will lend the room a consistent look and feel, which, in the end, gives it a calming and inviting vibe.
  • Does it need repainting? Take the opportunity while the room is bare. When choosing a paint color for the guest room, select one that is neutral or earth-toned to create a soothing and relaxing environment after a long day of visiting, shopping, walking, etc.

Choose the furniture

  • Cheap doesn’t have to be a bad thing. Especially in today’s competitive market, some bedroom furniture manufacturers offer stylish yet budget-conscious beds or bedroom sets. Making a budget and sticking to it will give you a great feeling of satisfaction when you see the results of your handiwork.
  • The bed should be the largest size possible that will fit in the space, so that your guests will be comfortable, especially if they are sharing.
  • A nightstand makes any bedroom, particularly a guest room, functional and comfortable. It’s almost a must-have for visitors – putting a lamp by the bed saves them from having to hop out and turn out the light. Nightstands also add to the room’s storage capacity, a plus for tidying away toiletries, beauty products and souvenirs.
  • Add a dresser or a chest of drawers. Again, the more storage options you provide your guests, the more comfortable they will be. If you don’t have the room for a standard sized dresser or chest, another option is the lingerie chest. Lingerie chests are narrower than a chest of drawers, but offer a number of drawers, while designed specifically for clothing items such as nightgowns and undergarments, would be ideal in a guest room for other items of clothing as well.

What I Did

Hillsdale Westfield White Poster Bed

  • I didn’t have time to paint the entire room, which is a soft cream. I chose to paint the wall the headboard would rest against a deep mauve to make that side of the room the focal point. I wanted the emphasis on the bed and not on the desk.
  • Because my room is both my regular work space and a guest room, I chose to put a twin bed in the room. It opens up the space and makes it appear uncluttered, which is important to me when I am writing. But when guests like my sister and her husband come to visit, I get out the pop-up trundle and make up the two twin beds.
  • When I have visitors, I remove the file cabinet (it’s on wheels) and the laptop from the room to make the space less office-like.
  • I put a 4-drawer chest in the closet so that there would be room for both nightstands when the two twin beds are made up.

Designing a bedroom for guests that is warm and inviting doesn’t have to cost a lot. When it comes right down to it, it’s not the bedroom furniture that makes the room welcoming, but rather those special finishing touches like dressing the bed with luxurious bedding or placing a vase of flowers or a small gift basket on the dresser.
