From the Design Files of Heather B – Lighting Fixture Dilemma

Design Question

What type of lighting fixture would you place over a Tommy Bahama glass dining table (48″) with black cushions, in a room that has alternating panels of wood and mirrors? Also, the room, although narrow, has no tables – any suggestions?

Design Answer

This is a very cool looking space! Your instinct about the lighting fixture is a good one – it doesn’t really suit the style or mood of the room. Because the dining area and your living room are virtually one space I would suggest that you select a chandelier or pendant lighting fixture that matches the color of the ceiling fan, if you pick something that is predominately made of metal. (I can’t really tell from the picture if it’s brass, gold or brown.) Due to the number of reflective surfaces in the room, I’d try to avoid anything with mirrors or a really shiny metal finish.

Something like the Landmark Lighting Cirque 3-Light Pendant would fit in with the current décor design. The shade, comprised of different circles of colored shells, brings another layer of texture into the room. It is casual yet has an air of sophistication.

Since the dining set is made of natural material like rattan, choose a lighting fixture that will complement the “coastal” or organic appearance of your dining table and dining chairs. Even though it’s specifically designed for the outdoors, the Shady Lady Outdoor Atmosphere Pendant would be ideal for your dining area.

As for your second question, I definitely would not add a coffee table; it would interrupt the flow and lines of the space, which I think are perfect – it’s inviting and comfortable looking. I would suggest nesting tables. They come in a set of at least two, typically three different sized tables designed to fit one underneath the other. The great thing about them is that they can be stored in one place, like at either the right or left side of the sofa, and moved around the room as needed. Again, selecting nesting tables like the Hillsdale Pompei Nesting Occational Tables continues to add organic materials to the living and dining areas.

Hope these suggestions have been helpful.

Keep sending me your design questions, and especially if you’re asking for advice regarding wall color, tips on rearranging a specific room etc., include pictures if you can.

Chandelier Styles for Your Home

Friday, April 9th, 2010

There’s just something about a chandelier that adds that certain extra something to a room. No matter what the style, chandeliers have a dramatic appearance that is eye-catching, giving a room, hallway or foyer an elegance and sophistication that is unparallel. Say “chandelier” and the image that comes most readily to mind is a traditional chandelier with dripping crystals, elaborately scrolled arms and candlelight bulbs. But today, chandeliers are available in almost every décor style imaginable. If a chandelier appeals to you but you’re not sure what to look for, start with this quick chandelier style guide.

Contemporary Style Chandeliers

Contemporary chandeliers are typically less ornate and “busy” than traditional style chandeliers. They have sleek designs, with decorative accents that are relaxed and casual. While functional in design, contemporary chandeliers also offer style and versatility.

They tend to be more linear and utilize geometric shapes like round or oval shades or forms (the chandeliers overall shape or profile).

Characteristics of Contemporary Style Chandeliers

  • Sleek designs
  • Made with metals that have a highly-polished or matte finish as opposed to distressed
  • Chandelier arms are typically linear or have simpler lines with less ornamentation
  • Popular construction materials for the chandelier (base and arms) are chrome, nickel (brushed or polished and metal alloys with a low-sheen finish
  • Shades, when used, are simple geometric shapes such as round, oval and square
  • Glass shades or glass accents are often frosted or colored

Traditional Style Chandeliers

Traditional style chandeliers are unmistakable, instantly recognizable by their lavish and elegant appearance. They often have teardrop crystals, strings of crystal beads and other very elaborate or intricately detailed decorative elements.

The base and arms of a traditional chandelier are typically made of brass, wrought iron or cast iron. They tend to be impressive looking due to their ornate and sumptuous profiles. Metalwork accents can include ornate scrolls, twisted rope arms and acanthus leaf or other classical motifs.

Characteristics of Traditional Style Chandeliers

  • Chandeliers have ornate designs and patterns
  • Typical metals used are brass, wrought iron and cast iron
  • Distressed metal finishes are common
  • Gold gilded finish is a popular finish for very formal, traditional chandeliers
  • Crystals (especially teardrop shaped), beading and etched glass or colored glass are typical decorative accents
  • Shades are made of fabrics like silk, linen, brocade and velvet

Transitional Style Chandeliers

Transitional style can be easily described as old merges with new. While this style has the appearance of traditional, decorative accents are given a contemporary twist.

Ornamentation is pared down; lines are simpler; metalwork, while detailed doesn’t usually include ornate scrolls; and patterns are neutral and shapes and profiles are sophisticated. Blending elements of traditional and contemporary styles together, the emphasis of transitional chandeliers is on the interplay of the careful use of shape and decorative accent.

Characteristics of Transitional Style Chandeliers

  • Has the appearance and elegance of traditional style but decorative accents are not as ornate
  • Base and arms construction materials include iron, brass and alloys
  • Shade construction materials range from fabric to glass – plain, colored, frosted or etched
  • Lines and profiles, while curved are not “fussy” or “busy”

Modern Style Chandeliers

Modern style chandeliers have clean lines and streamlined detail. Profiles are strictly angular, geometric or asymmetrical. Usually made from highly polished chrome, brushed steel, polished steel or some other “space age” alloy, modern chandeliers typically have a futuristic appearance.

They have no decorative detail, depending instead on the combination of the design and the construction materials to create visual interest. The results can be dramatic and look like modern works of art.

Characteristics of Modern Style Chandeliers

  • Has a futuristic or space-age appearance
  • Base and arms construction materials are typically highly polished chrome, brushed steel, polished steel or some other alloy
  • Often doesn’t have shades
  • Shade construction materials include glass and plastics
  • Lines and profiles are angular, geometric and/or asymmetrical

Glamorous Hollywood style

Hollywood, in its heyday, from around the early 1930s to the mid-1950s, was renowned for its glamour and glitz. Men and women dressed to the nines in evening wear and beautiful, flowing gowns. Hollywood style interiors were dramatic, larger-than-life and daring. Yet Hollywood glam was also theatrically romantic. Above all it is daring and definitely makes a statement. Hollywood glam décor is characterized by rich velvets, mirrored tabletops and drawer fronts, impressive chandeliers and glitter. Old Hollywood style shone the spotlight on the person in the room. The result was lavish and sensual; the focus was on indulgence and luxury.

Hollywood Glam for the Bedroom

Hollywood glam décor is perfect for the bedroom where sensual, luxurious and romantic will never be out of place. Start with the color white. Add a button-tufted headboard. Choose something from the Hollywood Palm Collection by Murray Feiss to shed some light in your room. With its elaborate openwork detailing, these lighting fixtures and table lamps perfectly capture the essence of Hollywood style glamour. The bed bench is a must-have accent piece; the curved metal cabriole legs emphasizing its romantic nature.

 Hollywood Glam for the Bathroom

Sink Vanity

Wake up your bathroom with some Hollywood glamour reminiscent of Rita Hayworth, Carole Lombard and Ingrid Bergman. Nothing says “glamorous” like mirrored surfaces, marble counter tops and polished nickel drawer pulls. This particular bathroom vanity has decorative molding and a beautiful serpentine front that gives it an undulating appearance as well as a luxuriant romantic feel.

Select furniture that is oversized and theatrical. The backs and arms of sofas, couches, occasional chairs and armchairs should be curved, with flowing lines and dramatic profiles. Decorative detail, while elaborate, should not be too busy, but instead restrained in luxuriantly stylized manner. This style is all about the details. Add brocaded throw pillows to the sofa or club chair. Make sure to include table lamps in highly polished silver or richly gilded bronze.

No matter what room in your home you choose to give a Hollywood glam look to begin with a color scheme that will create a sense of glamour such as luxuriant creams, chocolate shades, whites and jeweled hues including jade, ruby and turquoise. Furniture pieces should be beautiful to look at, with plenty of curves and embellishments. The room should be textured with gold leaf, lacquered surfaces or lacquered hardware, diamond or cut glass accents and plenty of fur, either in the guise of upholstered sofas or chairs or as accent pillows and cushions. Don’t forget to accessorize with mirrors, bigger and more opulent the frame, the better.
