The Evolution of the Club Chair

One of the best aspects of the well-known Club Chair is that it is so rich in history. Named after the 1920’s gentleman’s clubs it was a major feature of, Club Chairs have travelled through the years and endured several transformations.

It was the typical 1920’s man who brought the design of a padded, sprung and fully upholstered seat to a whole new level of regard.

Imagine a room filled with lavishly carved wooden furniture, dark pig leather materials, and the thick smoke from lit cigars. Gentleman’s clubs were men’s getaway – the place they could socialise, smoke, have a drink and relax in supremely comfortable seating.

This style of interior decorating is still relevant today, commonly used in a home office or masculine living room. If old world design appeals to you, take a look at the Finer By Design Oxford Brown Leather Club Chair.

It has the classic craftsmanship of the period, along with nail head trim and plush leather. The espresso colored piece is both snug and inviting, and can easily be incorporated within a similarly furnished home.

However, the traditional design developed as time went on. The mid 1920’s saw the introduction of the Art Deco era, transforming the chair into a more simplistic and formal piece of furniture.

The notorious ‘Wassily’ chair, designed by Marcel Breuer, was an example of this. Made out of canvas and bent tubular steel, the chair became a work of art rather than an item of relaxation.

The Alphaville Wassily Art Deco Club Chair has a historical background, and is still as impressive as when the original version was launched.. Breuer’s design maintains its credibility, and can be integrated within a modish and minimalistic home.

After World War II, the Club Chair grew in recognition again. Padded foam was introduced and the design was available in a wide range of colors. 1956 saw the creation of the Eames Lounge Chair, by American designers Charles and Ray Eames.

Manufactured out of moulded plywood and leather, the Eames Lounge Chair innovatively blended both fashion and comfort. The usability of the design has made it a timeless piece, and even now its overall charm makes it effective in any home, from a chic bachelor pad to a chaotic family house.

These days, Club Chairs are an attractive addition to most rooms, from the living room to the master bedroom. Due to the range of styles available now, they can also be incorporated within any decorating theme.

For example, the Global Furniture USA 757 Series Sofa Club Chair in White Leather would be ideal within contemporary decor due to its geometric quality and the contrast between white and black.

Alternatively, a graceful and modern home that boasts simplicity and elegance could make room for the Homelegance Petite Small ArmChair.

It is a great example of how far the original structure has come, from being somewhat bulky and masculine, to more compact and feminine in shape.

However, the design that has sustained its popularity the most is the traditional 1920’s version, club chair & ottoman. The classic leather upholstery and sturdy form is still sought after due to its luxurious nature.

After all these years, the Club Chair offers the same package as it did all those years ago – ultimate relaxation and a place to escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
