Comfort foods Good; Comfort Furniture even Better!

Wednesday, October 27th, 2010

As we get further into autumn and closer to winter, a natural instinct is to reach for those comfort foods, like beefy stews and hearty soups that we know will keep the chills away. Another common reaction is to hibernate or at the very least, make our living spaces cozier and as comfortable as possible. In preparation for what winter will bring consider ramping up your living room’s comfort quotient for the perfect remedy to a cold and snowy day.

Ottomans

While an ottoman is a versatile piece of furniture because they can be used in a number of different ways, for anything from a coffee table to extra seating, it still is the easiest way to make a chair the ultra place to veg out. The great thing about ottomans is that they can just as conveniently be parked in front of the sofa. An ottoman is also a handy place to drape a comforter or afghan.

Recliners

A recliner is a type of living room chair that is specifically built for comfort…and just plain lounging around. While the living room is the most obvious place, recliners are great additions to other room in your home such as the family room, den or media room. Because recliners are designed for relaxation, they can increase your feeling of well-being.

Fireplaces

Nothing says “cozy comfort” better than an electric fireplace. Adding an electric fireplace doesn’t take much effort, but the payoff is huge on the comfort scale. There’s just something about a fireplace that lends a living room an instantly warm and welcoming ambiance.

Gel Fuel Sconce

Available floor space is often more precious than gold now that living spaces have become smaller and more compact. With winter not very far, our thoughts turn to nesting, being comfortable and keeping warm. Fireplaces have an exceptional psychological appeal, conjuring up visions of snuggling up with that someone special or sharing mugs of hot chocolate around a roaring fire with friends. How do you get the benefits of a wood burning fireplace if you live in an apartment, condo or loft? Electric or gel fuel fireplaces can provide any room with the glowing ambiance and homey style of a traditional fireplace. But what if you don’t even have room for one of those?

Silver Electric Fireplace

The answer is easy. Attach it to the wall instead. Decorating with wall mounted fireplaces has become a growing interior design trend. Mounted at eye level, an electric fireplace or a gel fuel fireplace creates a focal point in the room much like a flat screen TV or a large framed picture. And some of the wall mount fireplaces available today are so innovative that they are undeniably space-saving works of art.

Electric Fireplace

There are many great things about wall-mounted fireplaces: they are convenient, generally lightweight, eco-friendly and don’t have to be maintained like a wood burning fireplace. When choosing a wall mount fireplace, decide whether or not you would like it to provide heat. An electric wall mounted fireplace is an excellent secondary heat source, whereas, while a wall mount gel fuel fireplace does generate a small amount of heat, its purpose is mainly decorative. Instead of electricity, a gel fireplace burns a grain-alcohol fuel in gel form that comes in cans; one can typically provides up to three hours of flames. The can be resealed and used until it’s emptied. Smokeless and safe, a gel fuel wall mount fireplace is ecologically safe. Both gel fuel and electric fireplaces are ideal space-savers and do add that special welcoming touch to any room they are in.

Regardless of space issues in a condominium or an apartment, there are certainly corners. Use one to its best advantage by adding a corner wall mount fireplace to create a cozy place to curl up with a good book or just sit and stare at the flames.

Electric Fireplace with Rectangular Trim

all mounted fireplaces are a great way to create the ambiance of a real fire without having to keep a supply of logs on hand or remembering to clean the chimney. And the best thing about them is that they are portable. You can move them from one room to another or you can take them with you if and when you have to move.
